The Best Things to Do & See on Gozo, Malta

Situated off the north coast of Malta, Gozo is the second largest island in the Maltese archipelago and, while it’s not as well known as the main island, is an absolute must-see during any visit to the country. A day trip is a non-negotiable and if you’re able to fit in a few days on the island…even better! It’s steeped in rich history and you’ll be surrounded with beautiful natural scenery, paired with a unique blend of European and Mediterranean architecture. I stayed on Gozo for 3 nights and was never at a loss for things to do. Keep reading for my picks of The Best Things to Do & See on Gozo, Malta.

Victoria

Victoria (also known as Rabat by local Gozitans) is the capital city of Gozo. This stunning fortified city has been settled since Neolithic times and was first fortified during the Bronze Age. Stepping inside the Citadella, you can imagine what life may have been like back when it was first built, and can also enjoy amazing 360° views across the island as you wander along the city ramparts. Better yet, entry to the Citadella is free! After exploring the streets of the Citadella, make sure you pick up a traditional Maltese Qassatat from one of the many bakeries in town and make your way to Villa Rundle Park to sit and people-watch while you enjoy your pastry!

Blue Lagoon, Comino

I’m sure the Blue Lagoon will be on every travel guide you read about Malta, and with good reason! Located on the small island of Comino, half way between Malta and Gozo, the Blue Lagoon’s crystal clear aquamarine waters will truly take your breath away. I’d recommend heading to Comino as early as possible in the day to enjoy the Lagoon for an hour or two crowd-free. A return ferry will cost you 13 and you can find the schedule and terminal locations on the Comino Ferries website.

Dwerja

Originally known for being the home of the Azure Window, Dwerja is a lovely spot to spend a few hours on a warm afternoon. While if you’re looking to snap a pic of the Azure Window, you’ll be left disappointed as it actually collapsed back in 2017, Dwerja does have more to offer! There’s the impressive Fungus Rock, which is a 60m tall limestone rock sitting off the coast that was known to have a rare fungus with medicinal benefits growing on top back in the day. You’ll also find the Inland Sea, a natural salt water pool that’s filled by a 7m underwater arch that leads out to the ocean. The Inland Sea is a nice place to grab a beer, sit back and relax for a few hours and is also a famous diving site on Gozo. You might even be able to spot where some scenes from Game of Thrones were filmed here!

Ta’Cenc Cliffs

One of my favourite sunset spots on Gozo, the Ta’Cenc Cliffs stretch along the southern coast of Gozo and at 120m above sea level, the steep drop off alone is enough to take your breath away (let alone the view)! Having a car makes it much easier to access the cliffs, although there are some local buses that will get you fairly close. Once you’re near the Hotel Ta’Cenc & Spa, you’ll find a well-kept walking path from the road to the cliffside viewpoint. Watching the ocean as the sun sets over the cliffs will leave you feeling calmer than a day at the spa!

Marsalforn salt pans

Gozo is well-known for it’s sea salt production and the Marsalforn salt pans have played an important part in this for the past 350 years. It’s a tradition that has been passed down through local families for generations, with these salt pans believed to be the oldest that are still in use! You can even pick yourself up a small bag of sea salt for a few euros from local vendors, with sweet shop fronts carved into the hills along the road. Looking over the salt pans feels like you’re seeing a giant chessboard carved into the rockface.

Wied II Gashri

Wied Il Gashri is a small swimming cove nestled in between two cliffs, not far from the Marsalforn salt pans. You can drive right to the top of the cliffs, or walk west past the salt pans to reach the steps that lead you to this crystal clear swimming spot. Perfect for a cooling dip after exploring the salt pans!

Xlendi Bay

Xlendi Bay is where I stayed on Gozo and I absolutely fell in love. The town wraps around a rocky inlet, with a small sandy beach and cliffside rocks that are perfect for jumping off into the Mediterranean Sea. Xlendi Bay is also a popular diving spot on the island and is perfect for beginners looking to learn the ropes of scuba diving.

Ramla Bay

Ramla Bay is the largest sandy beach on Gozo and is a lovely spot to park up for the day. While you’re there, make your way up to Tal Mixta Cave and enjoy a stunning view over the beach. Sadly, I was having such a relaxing time at Ramla Bay that I didn’t snap any pics to share!

If you do get the chance to visit Gozo, please take it! I truly loved my time there and found it so different to the Malta mainland.
